Dr. Girnita, can you tell us about the inspiration behind the book Thriving with Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Dr. Girnita: Absolutely! The book was born out of a need to bridge the gap between medical research and practical, everyday strategies for people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Too often, patients receive a diagnosis and are given a prescription but not enough guidance on how to truly improve their quality of life. This book is designed to empower individuals with science-backed strategies that complement medical treatment and help them take control of their health.
What are some of the biggest misconceptions about RA that you address in the book?
One major misconception is that RA only affects the joints. In reality, it is a systemic autoimmune disease that can impact the entire body, including the heart, lungs, and eyes. Another common myth is that medication is the only way to manage RA. While medication is crucial, lifestyle factors—such as diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep—play a significant role in disease management and overall well-being.
The book emphasizes a science-backed approach to managing RA. Can you give us an example of a key strategy?
One of the most important strategies is an anti-inflammatory diet. Research has shown that foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber can help reduce inflammation and improve symptoms. For example, the Mediterranean diet, which includes fish, nuts, olive oil, and plenty of fresh vegetables, has been linked to lower levels of inflammation in RA patients.
How does stress affect RA, and what are some effective ways to manage it?
Stress is a major trigger for RA flares. It activates the body's immune response, leading to increased inflammation. In the book, we discuss various stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and even engaging in enjoyable hobbies. Regular physical activity, like yoga or swimming, can also help reduce stress and improve overall health.
You talk about movement and exercise in the book. How can people with RA stay active without worsening their symptoms?
Movement is crucial, but it needs to be done in a way that protects the joints. Low-impact exercises such as swimming, cycling, and gentle yoga are excellent choices. Strength training can also be beneficial if done carefully. The key is to listen to your body, start slow, and avoid overexertion. Working with a physical therapist can also be helpful in developing a personalized exercise plan.
Sleep is often overlooked in chronic illness management. Why is it so important for RA patients?
Poor sleep can worsen inflammation and make RA symptoms more severe. Many RA patients experience sleep disturbances due to pain, but improving sleep hygiene—such as maintaining a consistent bedtime, avoiding screens before bed, and using relaxation techniques—can make a big difference. The book provides practical tips to help individuals improve their sleep quality and, in turn, their overall health.
What advice would you give to someone newly diagnosed with RA?
First and foremost, don’t panic. RA is a manageable condition, and with the right approach, you can still lead a fulfilling life. Educate yourself about the disease, work closely with a rheumatologist, and incorporate lifestyle changes that support your health. Small, consistent steps—such as adopting an anti-inflammatory diet, staying active, managing stress, and prioritizing sleep—can have a profound impact on your well-being.
